Guest blog by Richard Scott and the Allen Eagles Competitive Shooting Team
This past weekend, June 11-13, 415 fifth through twelfth graders competed in the Scholastic Clay Target Program’s 2021 Texas State Shotgun Championships in San Antonio at the National Shooting Complex.
More than 143,000 targets and 5,720 boxes of shotgun ammo decided individual, squad, and team state champions in American Skeet, American Trap, and Sporting Clays. Medals, trophies, and belt buckles were awarded to athletes in grades 5-12 competing in their respective classifications. For most, this was the peak of their season having battled the elements throughout the 6-month league which started back in November 2020. The final stop in their season will be at SCTP National Championships July 14-17 in Marengo, OH competing against 3,000+ shooting athletes from across the nation.
The following Allen High School students have been named the top 5 athletes in each discipline for the State of Texas and were named to the All-State-Team representing Texas at Nationals are Varsity Co-Captain-Owen Lyons (Trap & Skeet), JV Captain-Dylan Little (Skeet), Brandon Martin (Sporting Clay), Cole Anderson (Trap), and Logan Martinez (Skeet). They will compete at Nationals in Ohio next month.
Not only do Allen Eagles excel on the field but they excel in the classroom too. The following Allen Eagle athletes were named to the National SSSF All Scholastic Team: Samantha Gott (Varsity Co-Captain), Allison Hayes, Dylan Little (JV Captain), Brandon Martin, Logan Martinez, and Nick Welch.
The Allen Eagles Competitive Shooting Team won the High School High Overall (H.O.A.) Team Championship by a margin of 51 targets out of 1,500 over the Dripping Springs High School Team, followed by 3rd place Spartan Clay Target Team, 4th place Grace Cougars of Tyler, with Southlake Carroll High School Clay Target Team in 5th place.
Allen’s, Cole Anderson, shot an amazing 99/100 and tied for first in American Trap which required a shootoff. He fought hard in the heat and ended up with the Silver medal. Another outstanding performance was by our very own Brandon Martin who shot a perfect round of Sporting Clay. He went 100/100 to clinch the GOLD for Varsity Men’s Sporting Clay.
“Every year, we graduate a bunch of great shooters and fool ourselves into thinking we’ve seen the best of the best. But each year, a new crop of young shooters step up to the plate and raise the bar,” noted Eagles head coach Jason Anderson. “We just reload.”
Allen had a host of individual and squad award winners too!

Here are the latest updates to the Record-Breaking 2021 SCTP National Championships being held at the Cardinal Center in Marengo Ohio, July 8-17!
As always, if you need help, please reach out to any of the SCTP National Staff for assistance!
We have added additional squads to the Wednesday/Thursday rotation for Singles Trap. Squads 499-522 on banks 1-3 were added for those afternoons for teams that found the rest of the schedule already full and as expected, they entirely filled up by the end of the day! We will be adding 2 more banks of fields, bank 9 and bank 12 for all flights throughout the days on the Wednesday/Thursday rotation. With the Singles Trap numbers soaring to over 2,300 participating athletes and total registrations well over 7,200 for this tournament, we could very well see a world record being set this year at the Cardinal Center!
An additional Bunker Trap rotation for 30 athletes was added to the International disciplines. Squad slots 57-66 were added to Bunker but will be shot on the I-Skeet days of Thursday/Friday, July 8-9. This was the only way we could add the athletes still wanting to compete in the Bunker discipline. Next years Intl competition will see a couple days added as well as an additional Bunker field! Anybody wanting to and able to help referee for the Intl. disciplines this year, please contact Terri Dewitt as soon as possible! We could use your help! bluerockcoaching@icloud.com
Super Sporting has been added to the National Championships this year on the front end of the tournament and is available for squading! This can be shot on either Thursday, Friday or Saturday July 8, 9 or 10! It is a 100 target competition with awards in all divisions! We are gaging the interest in this for next years competition.
There will be a Trap HOA that will include Trap Singles, Handicap Trap and Doubles Trap. Any team wanting to compete in that HOA must shoot all 3 of these events to qualify!
Make A Break will be offered again this year! There will be daily ammunition prizes as well as awards for top lady and top guy. Overall winner will walk away with a brand new Winchester SX3!
Squad slots will start to be combined for most disciplines this week. If you have a squad that is short, you may want to add an athlete that is on the fence about attending or those single slots will be populated with single athletes from another team. This is done to free up slots for teams that have full squads needing to register.
The Wild Rose Grill crew will be offering a healthier choice in food this year. They will be located behind the Grandstands in a big tent and will offer a Southwest Chicken Sandwich, Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich, fresh smoked pulled pork sandwich and more! They also do team catering at your campsites! If you are interested in having the Wild Rose cater your teams supper any night, please contact Todd Veeser at 1-715-616-1197. They can offer some sides like cornbread, green beans, potato salad and more as well as stir fry, burgers and other menu options but will have a limited time they can do this, so don’t wait too long!
Get some of that great Hunters Blend Coffee in that same tent behind the Grandstands!
Ammunition! Probably the biggest question we get right now is the availability of ammunition. Our sponsors have confirmed that they will make sure there is plenty of ammunition for teams and athletes at this years Nationals! Teams may be required to show proof of events being shot for purchase, but ammo will be available! Also, anybody wanting to shoot side events like the flurry, ammo will also be available for sale to be shot at that side game!
Squading and registration for the Kids & Clays / SCTP Charity shoot is open! That will take place on Friday/Saturday, July 16/17 on the Sporting Clays course. This is open to everyone, athletes and adults alike!
State Advisors, please reach out to your Director of Development as your state shoots are finalized. As in the past, All State Teams will be determined by finishes at the state level shoots, and those athletes who are then attending the National Championships!
Please stay tuned for more weekly updates regarding the SCTP National Championships this July!

RE Ranger, manufacturer of performance eyewear, has renewed its sponsorship of the Scholastic Clay Target Program for 2021.
“RE Ranger understands the importance of supporting the youth shooting sports and national organizations like the SCTP” Said Sarah Dacko, General Manager of RE Ranger. “It’s organizations like the SCTP that allow companies like ours to showcase our innovative and affordably priced shooting eyewear. We couldn’t be happier to be involved and supporting a first-class program like SCTP!”
“As a youth development program that focuses on youth shooting sports, safety is always our number one concern,” stated SCTP National Director, Tom Wondrash. “We are very happy to have the support of many different manufacturers of shooting safety products. RE Ranger is one of the most commonly used brand of shooting glasses by athletes in our program and we are very thankful to have them as a sponsor for nine years now. Our long-standing partnership is a constant reminder of the industry-wide support for the SCTP and youth shooting sports currently and for many years to come!”
Four members of the SCTP 2020 International Team persuasively made the transition to the USA Shooting (USAS) National Junior and Junior Development Team as a result of their performance at the USAS Junior World Championship Selection in Kerrville, TX last week.
Tristan Schroder (MI) and Sydney Krieger (AZ) earned positions on the National Junior Trap Team and will have the opportunity to compete at both the Kazakhstan World Cup and the Junior World Championships in Peru this fall. Joining their trap teammates are skeet athletes Jordan Sapp (AZ) and Madeline Corbin (WI). Sapp claimed a spot on the Men’s National Junior Skeet Team and will travel to both Kazakhstan and Peru; Corbin will have the chance to compete at the Junior World Championships in Peru as a member of the Women’s National Development Skeet Team.
Perhaps Jordan Sapp sums it up best, “It’s a dream come true. Five years ago, this was only a dream and now it’s a reality. It’s exhilarating.”
“I could not be prouder of the performances these athletes gave this past week. They came with a game plan and they stuck to their plan. All the hard work they did in the off season really showed in their performance,” said SCTP International Team Head Coach Terri Dewitt.
As the official youth feeder program for USA Shooting, the SCTP selects its International Team members off of performances in Bunker Trap and International Skeet at the National Championships each July. International Team Members have the opportunity to attend several camps and competitions lead by Coach Dewitt. Make sure you and your team are registered with the SCTP to take advantage of this incredible opportunity!

Like last year, due to the extremely large volume of teams and coaches trying to squad for the National Championships, we will again be allowing teams to “pre-squad” for the 2021 SCTP National Championships.
Here’s how it will work:
1. Send a check for the proper amount of all squads and athletes to the Burlington WI address post marked no earlier than 12:01am on May 7th and no later than midnight on May 17th.
2. Money received is “Non-Refundable”. Pre-registration fees will not be returned for any athletes that do not attend the SCTP National Championships.
3. All squads must be “pre-built” on your team’s home page for the National Championships. Teams will be allowed to change athletes as they see fit later but all squads must be ready to populate the shooting schedule.
4. SCTP will populate the squad assignments based on the time and date received (time stamp) on the envelope containing your paperwork and check. PLEASE send by regular mail with NO signature required. Sending paperwork requiring a signature may delay your paperwork!
5. A form will be available on the SSSF website that will require your information along with dates and times you would like your squads assigned. Please give us 3 options for times and days preferably different days for at least one of your options.
6. Teams will be notified of their pre-registration by May 29th and before normal registration which opens on June 1st.
Note:
Completed form(s) must be sent in with payment either by credit card or by check, no payment sent in with forms will result in no squads entered for that team. These payments are “nonrefundable”!! If you pay for 15 athletes and only 12 show up, the other 3 athlete’s fees are not returned.
Completed forms and payments must be mailed to us no sooner than May 7th, 2021 and sent to:
SCTP Nationals Pre-Registration C/0 Amanda Wondrash 165 Bay Ridge Lane Burlington, WI 53105
We look forward to seeing you all in Marengo, Ohio the week of July 10th – 17th, 2021.
We welcome all of you back for another great season of outside activities in the clay target shooting world! This past year has been one for the books but it has also given us time to think and regroup, allowing some changes that we feel will be best for everybody especially considering the growth we are seeing and involvement at the National Championships!
Please read through all of the information below. Due to certain possible restrictions and gathering of large crowds and anything else that may be in place, we feel that many of these items will be for the best. We ask that you all bear with us while we work to put on the best possible National Championship that we can for you!
1.) “Pre-Registration” for Nationals – National Championship pre-registration will open on May 7th and all information must be postmarked no later than May 17th. Pre-Registration is available for Trap Singles, Sporting Clays and Skeet ONLY! Please do not send information to us for any other disciplines. All other disciplines will be open for squading on June 1st. Pre Registration materials are available on our website at www.mysctp.com
2.) There will be no coach / state advisor meetings at Nationals. The rules and information to be shared will be available at check in where the acting head coach will sign off on receiving a copy of the shared information.
3.) SCTP International Championships – The International National Championships will be conducted July 8-11. I-Skeet will be shot July 8/9 and Bunker Trap will be shot July 10/11. These will be held again at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio. Coaches, when registering your athletes for the International Disciplines, please do NOT squad them for any other shooting activities those days. True to the International disciplines, squads are chosen at random and squad times and flights will vary depending on total number of participants! This is an actual International event in all aspects, not a practice or try it type event. The SCTP International Team will be chosen from the finalists of this event!! Trophies and medals will be awarded! 4.) Golf Carts – Golf carts will be available through Eagle Golf Cars 888-432-3059 www.eaglegolfcars.net
5.) COACHES! It is your responsibility to make sure you have read and shared all information with your parents and athletes. Please make sure your athletes are properly squaded and in the correct division!! *Section 3B in the SCTP Handbook SSSF – Official SCTP Handbook (mysctp.com)
6.) Awards Ceremonies – Awards ceremonies for Skeet, Sporting Clays, Double Trap, Handicap Trap will take place on Friday evening, July 16 at about 5:30pm or right after the last squads are complete on the Trap Fields. All Team Shoot offs and 200 straight ties for Skeet and Sporting Clays will be shot off Thursday evening, July 15th after last squads are complete. For safety and those not wanting to be part of a large crowd, your teams may pick up your awards at the Trophy room between 9am and 12:00 noon on Friday, July 16. Award ceremonies for Skeet Doubles, Trap Singles and HOA awards will all take place after shooting is complete and all scores are entered on Saturday, July 17 in the grandstand area as in the past. If any team cannot attend the awards ceremonies, please stop in and see us. If possible, we will try and get you your awards before you leave the property!
7.) Last Competitor Standing competition will take place on Wednesday, July 14th at about 7:00pm. Wristbands must be purchased for $5 and worn at the competition. Lots of great prizes!
8.) College Day – Meet College coaches and some of their teammates on College day Friday, July 16th from 9am – 4pm. At the tents between vendor buildings 2-3. Colleges who attended the SCTP College Championships in March will have first choice table placement, other non-attending colleges will be filled in after that.
9.) Events like the “SCTP Pizza Party” and the “Ice Cream Social” will be a TBD based on any restrictions set forth by the state of Ohio. If everything is business as usual, Pizza night will be Thursday, July 15th and the Ice Cream Social will be Friday, July 16th. As allowed, we hope to hold the Opening Ceremonies on Wednesday, July 14th at approximately 5:30pm at the Grandstands!
10.) PLEASE stop by and see our many sponsors! We should be at full speed with all sponsors present again this year. They support our program our athletes and the shooting sports in general, please patronize them when and where possible….and thank them!
11.) New College Nationals Dates for the 2021/2022 season – Dates for the College Nationals will be October 7-10, 2021. After discussing with many of the attending college coaches this past March, we have decided to get the College Nationals back in sync with when we used to hold them. Per many of your requests, the International Disciplines will both be offered in a larger format. Based on the interest, the International Disciplines may start a day or 2 earlier than the posted date.
12.) Help us help you! If you see anything inappropriate and have any problems, please let us know asap! We want to make your National Championship experience the best it can be!
We will do a follow up email to all attending teams about the 3rd week of June, please watch for that.
Many of our teams have taken advantage of the Federal Ammunition deal and the Winchester Ammunition offer. Most if not all these orders have been processed and most/all are set for delivery to the teams. Please be on the watch for them and again, please reach out and thank these companies for their support of our teams!
