SCTP Shooters Compete in International Disciplines

SCTP shooters got a taste of Olympic-style shooting last week, competing in the 2014 SCTP National Team Championships for International Disciplines at the International Shooting Park near Colorado Springs, CO.

This year’s competitor numbers doubled last year’s totals. Bunker trap had 90 registrations, with 44 for International Skeet and 55 for International Double Trap.

In addition to squad and individual awards for the three disciplines, four athletes earned positions on the USA National Junior Team as a result of their scores:

SCTP and SPP Make History with National Championships

More than 2500 young shooters, along with thousands of coaches, family members, and supporters, descended upon the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, Ill. last week for the largest youth shooting event ever held, the SCTP and SPP National Championships.

The July 14-19 event saw significant increases in virtually every metric over 2013’s record-setting Nationals. In the SCTP event alone, competitors shot 715,000 targets, a 35% increase over last year. Shooters from 175 SCTP teams came from 26 states.

SPP also saw its own increases. In only its second Junior/Senior National Championship, SPP experienced an increase of 62% in participant numbers, hosting 326 shooters representing 39 teams from 15 states. Earlier this year, SPP hosted a separate Collegiate National Championship with close to 100 shooters from 24 squads.

With the largest contingency of shooters, Trap had almost 1900 participants, a 19% increase. A total of 736 shooters shot Skeet for a 29% growth, and the 677 Sporting Clays shooters represented a 30% increase.

Of the 2180 SCTP shooters, 1818 were male and 361 female.

“An event of this magnitude could only take place so successfully with a great deal of hard work and dedication from our student athletes, coaches, parents, team volunteers, and our own staff,” said Ben Berka, President and Executive Director of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF), which powers SCTP and SPP. “We are especially grateful to our many sponsors and benefactors who make it possible for us to create an unforgettable experience for our athletes. We also owe kudos to the World Shooting and Recreational Complex, a remarkable venue that hosted our thousands of shooters and spectators with ease. We look forward to hosting our 2015 National Championships there.”

There’s Plenty to Do at Nationals!

Coaches and athletes may think there’s nothing to do at Nationals other than shoot your match for the day or watch others shoot. Au contraire!   There’s plenty to keep you busy and entertained — and shooting — all week. Here are just a few things to consider:

  • Rifle Side Match – This year we will offer a special Rifle Side Match, sponsored by Ruger and hosted by Pheasants Forever. Not only can you have fun shooting .22 rifles, you may even win one! The match winner will take home a Ruger 10/22 rifle, and there will be drawings to give away three more.
  • Special Pistol Shooting Clinic – PARA USA Professional Shooter, Travis Tomasie, will be hosting two clinics on Wednesday, July 16 at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the pistol berm. You don’t want to miss this!
  • SCTP Shooters: Try SPP – Give SPP competition a try. There will be loaner guns available and likely some open time slots. Check with registration at the pistol berm for openings.
  • Winchester Coaches’ Shoot-out – Coaches and adult volunteers can shoot daily, Monday through Friday, in the skeet-trap Make-a-Break. See the event program for details.
  • Shotgunning Demonstration by Dave Miller – CZ-USA’s Dave Miller will do fun shotgunning demonstrations on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 2:00 p.m.
  • And More! – Check the event program for more information on side games, demonstrations, evening events, and other activities. There’s something to do every minute!

Sign Up for Nationals Text Alert Service

Have you ever been to an event when the weather took a wet turn, and you wondered if the show would go on, or if there would be a delay, or if you should stay at the hotel — or what? Most of us have, and it isn’t a fun predicament.

Although we’ve requested perfect weather during the upcoming SCTP – SPP National Team Championships in Sparta, IL, we’re offering a text alert service that will allow us to keep you posted — just in case. We’ll also make daily announcements about events, schedule changes, opportunities to win prizes, and other things you should know.

This is strictly an opt-in service using an app that will protect your number and automatically delete it on July 21. In fact, we will never even see your phone number, so you don’t have to worry about it being used for anything else. You can also opt out of the service at any time during the event.

This a free service provided by SSSF; however, you should check your cell service plan to determine if there would be a charge from your provider for several text messages each day.

    SSSF Announces 2014 Scholarship Recipients

Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation is pleased to announce the 2014 recipients in our SSSF Scholarship Program. Forty-two SCTP and SPP student athletes will each receive a $1000 scholarship.

Athletes who graduated from high school in 2014 and will enroll in college this year were eligible to apply for the scholarships. Awards are based on SCTP/SPP participation, academics, need, and other factors.

The scholarships are being funded by generous sponsors who support our youth shooting programs, as well as supporters who raise funds through national banquets. For the SCTP scholarships, Beretta USA donated $10,000 to provide 10 scholarships, and the National Skeet Shooting Association and National Sporting Clays Association (NSSA-NSCA) contributed another $10,000 for 10 awards. SCTP National Fundraising Banquets provided $15,000 for 15 of the scholarships. NRA funded a $1000 special scholarship and will present two more $1000 scholarships to winners of the “Last Competitor Standing” competitions at the upcoming National Team Championships.

Of the six scholarships being awarded to SPP athletes, five are being funded by a donation from Smith & Wesson, while another is being funded by a $1000 donation from HiViz Shooting Systems.

SCTP’s Sydney Carson Earns Junior World Cup Gold

Sydney Carson of SCTP’s Kosko Dust Devils proved why she’s known as Syd Vicious among her friends when she won the Women’s Skeet Gold Medal at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in Syhl, Germany recently. Sydney was among four medalists and six individual finalists for the USA Shooting Team.

While the world stage podium may be somewhat new to Sydney, Gold Medals are nothing new for her. In 2013, Sydney was the SCTP Women’s International Skeet Champion.

Sydney ranked fourth during the 75-shot qualifier, but that all changed in the semifinals and finals where she outshot all six finalists. In her Gold Medal finals match-up, she defeated Russia’s Victoria Ostapets by a one-target margin, 13-12.

Along with her teammates Dania Vizzi (Odessa, Florida) and Hannah Houston (Columbia, Tennessee), Sydney was also part of the Gold Medal-winning team for Women’s Skeet.

Sydney just completed her junior year at John Glenn High School in North Liberty, Indiana. She is a member of the Kosko Dust Devils youth shotgun team affiliated with the Kosko Conservation Club in Warsaw. The club is part of the Scholastic Clay Target Program.

Wildlife for Tomorrow Donates to MidwayUSA Foundation for Arizona SCTP

Twenty-eight SCTP teams in Arizona, representing over 1,000 athletes, will benefit from a recent $340,000 donation to their endowment accounts with the MidwayUSA Foundation. The Phoenix-based conservation organization Wildlife for Tomorrow made the donation.

“The mission of the MidwayUSA Foundation is closely aligned with that of Wildlife for Tomorrow in Arizona,” said Steve Hirsch, President of Wildlife for Tomorrow. “Youth education concerning wildlife conservation and outdoor pursuits is central to our activities, and we are proud to work with the MidwayUSA Foundation to provide for endowment accounts to support youth shooting sports through Arizona’s very successful Scholastic Clay Target Program.”

Dennis Fogle, Arizona Game and Fish’s Shooting Sports Coordinator, leads the state’s SCTP program and said, “We would like to personally thank Wildlife for Tomorrow for their generous donation. These endowment accounts are key to a sustainable future for youth shooting sports in Arizona and the country. Without their support, the Arizona SCTP would not be the same, and we are grateful.” Active teams, like the 28 Arizona teams that will receive this donation, are eligible to draw a grant each year to assist with team expenses, such as ammunition, range fees, travel, uniforms, and more.

Steve Hirsch added, “These programs not only foster appreciation for outdoor pursuits, they establish a tradition of involvement in wildlife conservation activities that will far outlast these youth shooters’ participation on their teams. The endowments established by the MidwayUSA Foundation have greatly assisted Wildlife for Tomorrow to fulfill our mission of furthering the North American model of wildlife conservation in Arizona.”
