The SCTP just completed its second banquet of the year. This banquet was held in Waterford, Wisconsin, on Friday, March 17, 2017, and is the program’s longest-running banquet to date.
This year’s banquet was the most successful, raising much-needed funding for the program’s scholarship fund, as well as general operating expenses. More than 240 attendees spent a high-energy evening bidding on hunting trips, fishing trips, vacations to Belize/Costa Rica/St. Thomas and many other items along with many high-end firearms and locally donated items.
The attendees included representation from 11 SCTP teams across Wisconsin. These teams represented over 1,000 athletes of the states more than 3,500 currently registered with the SCTP National organization.
Stealing the stage at this year’s banquet was “Fred”. Who is Fred you ask? Well, Fred was a 17-pound lobster brought in from Gloucester, Massachusetts. Yes, that’s 17 pounds of lobster and quite possibly the largest lobster to invade Wisconsin. He was part of a cooler of seafood that was raffled off (and won by Central Falcons head coach, Al Chickerneo)!
“We had great representation from Wisconsin teams this year and many left with some of the nicest banquet prizes you could ask for!” Tom Wondrash, SCTP’s national director and banquet MC, said. “This is where we get to showcase many of our industry sponsors’ donations and contributions to our program. We are very thankful for their support as well as the many in attendance that night!”
The banquet host team, the Burlington High School Shooting Team, will see a $10,000 donation made in the teams MidwayUSA Foundation team endowment account for its role in raising local donations and helping organize and work at this year’s event. The team’s help and the help from other local teams are what has made this banquet the premier fundraising banquet of the year for the SCTP!

Jason Anderson was brought on in January as the SCTP’s newest Regional Field Representative and covers the “Lower Midwest” area that includes Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
Anderson is in his seventeenth year as a public educator in the great state of Texas and in his eighth year at Allen High School in Allen Texas. He is the Head Coach of the two-time SCTP High School National Champions Allen Eagles Competitive Shooting Team, the Allen Archery Team, and the Bass Fishing Team. At Allen ISD he also developed the Outdoor Adventures Program, which is in its sixth year.
Allen Eagles Assistant head coach Richard Scott commented, “Winning is great, but Jason does so much more for these kids than a school teacher is required to do. Above all else, he’s been a positive influence and role model to hundreds of athletes while instilling in them a lifelong respect and appreciation for shooting sports.”
Anderson graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Sports Science and a Minor in Health. He was honored by the Dallas Ecological Foundation as Educator of the Year in 2014. In 2015 he became an NRA training counselor, and he is also an NRA Coach Level 2. Anderson has served as Texas’ State Advisor to the Scholastic Clay Target Program for the past three years.
“I am honored and excited to continue to promote and support SCTP teams,” Anderson stated. “Supporting the SCTP coaches is key in our success.”
According to Carlton Nether, director of development for the Western U.S., “Jason brings a wealth of knowledge to our team. His dedication to youth sports in Texas is exactly what we need to continue our strong growth in the southern states.”
For a limited time, SCTP athletes who purchase a Browning firearm will get cash back. The offer is valid on retail purchases made between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2017. Download the rebate form here. Redeem online at rebates.browning.com.
New for the 2017 shooting season will be the SCTP “All State Team”. This team will be comprised of athletes finishing in the top five positions at their respective state shoots in trap, skeet and sporting clays, male and female athletes combined and regardless of their team affiliation!
Those top five athletes (in each discipline) attending the SCTP National Championships being held in Marengo, Ohio, July 8-15, 2017, will have their scores count toward their “All State Team” score for that discipline. They will not shoot independantly of their team and squad, however, we will just use the scores shot at nationals for their “All State Team” score. Any ties will be shot off as a squad.
Special prizes will be issued for the top three states (athletes) by order of finish and will be presented at the awards ceremonies at the tournament. These will all be five-person squads.
If an athlete that finishes in the top five (at their state shoot) does not attend the national championships, we will then take the next competitor in line that will be attending nationals in July! That could be a 6th place state finisher, 7th place or so on down the line.
We will have more criteria posted on our website soon in the red tool bar under “SCTP” and then go to the “forms and handbook” section. If you have any other questions about this great opportunity for our athlete’s, please contact the directors of development, Chet Tuinstra or Carlton Nether, or contact National Director Tom Wondrash.
