GLOCK Donates $25,000 to SSSF to Benefit Scholastic Pistol Program

GLOCK, Inc. has made a $25,000 donation to the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) to benefit the Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP).

GLOCK Donation
L-R: Scott Moore, SPP National Director; R. Lee “The Gunny” Ermey; Josh Dorsey, GLOCK Vice President of Operations and Sales; and Ben Berka, SSSF President and Executive Director
The donation was presented to SSSF at last week’s NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Nashville, Tennessee.

GLOCK was one of the founding partners of the Scholastic Pistol Program when SSSF started the program in 2012 and has supported the program since with its products and participation.

Ed Fitzgerald, Special Projects Manager at GLOCK, Inc., is a member of SSSF’s Board of Directors and attends many SPP matches, not only to represent GLOCK, but also to work with the athletes and coaches and to assist with the operation of the events. Fitzgerald even travels to many matches throughout the South with a complete SPP/Action Target set-up for ranges that need targets for SPP events.

“GLOCK understands the importance of industry leadership in the promotion of a safe and effective way of introducing the concepts of basic competitive shooting to young men and women who are just starting out,” said Fitzgerald. “As the industry embraces this concept of supporting our young competitors, we will continue our efforts to lead the way in supporting the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation.”

In addition to the growth of the national program through GLOCK’s financial support, product donations, and loaner guns, the company’s generosity makes it possible for many SPP teams to have sufficient guns for competitors’ use and to raise funds for team expenses. The company also offers special pricing for SPP teams that allows team dollars to go further.

“The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation is honored to receive this major gift from GLOCK,” said Ben Berka, SSSF President and Executive Director. “With their support, we are able to further strengthen and grow our Scholastic Pistol Program at the grassroots level and provide local teams with the education, support, and resources to run successful programs.”

SSSF’s Donation of Over $1 Million to MidwayUSA Foundation Benefits 182 SCTP, SPP Teams

Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation made contributions of over $1 million this week to the MidwayUSA Foundation, Inc. accounts of 182 SCTP and SPP teams from 36 different states. The teams earned the endowment funds at recent national, regional, and state events.

This week’s total donation was $1,045,125. SCTP team accounts received $905,000 of that, which includes team earnings at the National Team Championships, regional events, and state shoots during the second and third quarters of 2014.

SPP teams received $133,100, which included earnings from its National Junior/Senior Championships and recent state matches.

“Through our broad membership base, we are fortunate to be able to support so many teams across the country,” commented Ben Berka, SSSF President and Executive Director. “These donations will help provide a perpetual funding source for local Scholastic Clay Target and Scholastic Pistol Programs. The funding we provide to team endowment accounts is another way for us to thank all of the teams, coaches, and athletes for their participation and excellent performance in SCTP and SPP events!”

In addition, $7,025 was donated via internally generated endowment money through SSSF and SCTP fundraisers. These funds will be matched by Larry and Brenda Potterfield of MidwayUSA. “By providing teams with fundraising tools at the local level, we are able to help contribute to team endowment accounts. At the same time, teams have the ability to raise operating money and awareness about their programs in the local community. The SSSF looks forward to providing more of these opportunities in the future to our SCTP and SPP member teams,” said Berka.

The donations bring SSSF’s contributions to $1,461,175 to date in 2014. SSSF expects its annual contributions to total more than $1.7 million by the end of 2014.

SCTP and SPP teams are awarded endowment funds through participation in sanctioned shoots. SSSF contributes the funding to the MidwayUSA Foundation Team Endowment Account Program on behalf of the teams. The purpose of the endowment program is to provide sustained financial support for youth shooting teams. Teams with an endowment account are able to draw a grant each year to use for team expenses.

SCTP and SPP Make History with National Championships

More than 2500 young shooters, along with thousands of coaches, family members, and supporters, descended upon the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, Ill. last week for the largest youth shooting event ever held, the SCTP and SPP National Championships.

The July 14-19 event saw significant increases in virtually every metric over 2013’s record-setting Nationals. In the SCTP event alone, competitors shot 715,000 targets, a 35% increase over last year. Shooters from 175 SCTP teams came from 26 states.

SPP also saw its own increases. In only its second Junior/Senior National Championship, SPP experienced an increase of 62% in participant numbers, hosting 326 shooters representing 39 teams from 15 states. Earlier this year, SPP hosted a separate Collegiate National Championship with close to 100 shooters from 24 squads.

With the largest contingency of shooters, Trap had almost 1900 participants, a 19% increase. A total of 736 shooters shot Skeet for a 29% growth, and the 677 Sporting Clays shooters represented a 30% increase.

Of the 2180 SCTP shooters, 1818 were male and 361 female.

“An event of this magnitude could only take place so successfully with a great deal of hard work and dedication from our student athletes, coaches, parents, team volunteers, and our own staff,” said Ben Berka, President and Executive Director of the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF), which powers SCTP and SPP. “We are especially grateful to our many sponsors and benefactors who make it possible for us to create an unforgettable experience for our athletes. We also owe kudos to the World Shooting and Recreational Complex, a remarkable venue that hosted our thousands of shooters and spectators with ease. We look forward to hosting our 2015 National Championships there.”

There’s Plenty to Do at Nationals!

Coaches and athletes may think there’s nothing to do at Nationals other than shoot your match for the day or watch others shoot. Au contraire!   There’s plenty to keep you busy and entertained — and shooting — all week. Here are just a few things to consider:

    • Rifle Side Match – This year we will offer a special Rifle Side Match, sponsored by Ruger and hosted by Pheasants Forever. Not only can you have fun shooting .22 rifles, you may even win one! The match winner will take home a Ruger 10/22 rifle, and there will be drawings to give away three more.
    • Special Pistol Shooting Clinic – PARA USA Professional Shooter, Travis Tomasie, will be hosting two clinics on Wednesday, July 16 at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the pistol berm. You don’t want to miss this!
    • SCTP Shooters: Try SPP – Give SPP competition a try. There will be loaner guns available and likely some open time slots. Check with registration at the pistol berm for openings.
    • Winchester Coaches’ Shoot-out – Coaches and adult volunteers can shoot daily, Monday through Friday, in the skeet-trap Make-a-Break. See the event program for details.
    • Shotgunning Demonstration by Dave Miller – CZ-USA’s Dave Miller will do fun shotgunning demonstrations on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 2:00 p.m.
    • And More! – Check the event program for more information on side games, demonstrations, evening events, and other activities. There’s something to do every minute!
