SCTP Collegiate Nationals Crowns New Champions

SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program) College Nationals returned to its historic fall schedule at the Cardinal Shooting Center with the International Bunker and Skeet Disciplines kicking off the event on the 6th of October. These very challenging clay target sports continue to gain the attention of American competitors and coaches, with many Olympians at Tokyo having spent previous time as athletes or supporters of the SCTP.

Using the newly constructed international venue at the Cardinal Center, SCTP saw one of the newest teams to the SCTP College cadre, University of the Ozarks from Arkansas would take top honors in both of the International Divisions of Bunker Trap and International Skeet.

Top achievements:

• Lindenwood University shot a 989/1000, taking top tournament honors in the American Trap event

• Jacksonville University set a SCTP College Nationals record in Sporting Clays, shooting a 985/1000

• Emmanuel College took the top spot in the 5-Stand event, shooting a 474/500

Networking and recruitment at Nationals:

Back by popular demand, high school athletes were invited to join the shoot, allowing them to compete in a separate high school competition. Intended as a useful opportunity for coaches interested in meeting the next class of shooters, the integration of networking is now a mainstay of College Nationals. Additionally, this gave rising athletes an opportunity to learn from college-level athletes and become familiar with college shooting programs throughout the nation.

Next up at the Cardinal Shooting Center: SCTP Olympic Training Camps and SCTP National Championships:

In addition to SCTP College Nationals, the Cardinal Shooting Center is also home to SCTP Olympic Training Camps, Spring Regional Championships, and July’s SCTP National Championship, the biggest shoot in Cardinal Center history. In the previous season’s event, over 2.2 million rounds were safely fired as teams of junior shooting sports athletes stepped to the line at their National Championships in an attempt to make it to the podium under the grandstand lights. The 2022 SCTP National Championship kicks off July 9th with the International Skeet and Trap events, followed by American disciplines, side games, and awards through the 16th.

Sparta, Georgia’s Lake Oconee Shotgun Team Looking to Stay on Top at the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) 2019 National Championships!

Twenty seven (27) Youth Athletes from the Sparta, Georgia Lake Oconee Shotgun Team are here at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio with one goal in mind! Equal or better that 2018 performance at the SCTP National Championships at the 2019 SCTP National Championships. In 2018, Team Oconee was the HOA Team for all three shotgun disciplines, trap, skeet, and sporting clays. In addition, Lake Oconee finished 4th overall in trap.

Steve Lane, Head Coach of the Lake Oconee Shotgun Team says, “our team worked very hard this season to prepare for the National Championships. Most of our athletes have returned from last year so we are heading into the Cardinal Center ready to perform at our best”.

In addition to the 27 athletes, Lake Oconee Shotgun Team has almost all the parents and even a few grandparents make the trip to support their youth athletes.

The Lake Oconee Shotgun Team has athletes from 5th grade through seniors in high school. Three of the team’s seniors are graduating this year, two of those graduating seniors will be members of the  Emanuel College Shotgun Team following graduation.

Pre-Registration for SCTP nationals begins May 15th, 2019

Like last year, due to the extremely large volume of teams and coaches trying to squad for the National Championships,  we will again be allowing teams to “pre-squad” for the 2019 SCTP National Championships at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio.

Here’s how it will work:
1. Send a check for the proper amount of all squads and athletes to the Burlington WI address post marked no earlier than 12:01am on May 15th and no later than midnight on May 22nd.

2. Money received is “Non-Refundable”. Pre-registration fees will not be returned for any athletes that do not attend the SCTP National Championships.

3. All squads must be “pre-built” on your team’s home page for the National Championships. Teams will be allowed to change athletes as they see fit later but all squads must be ready to populate the shooting schedule.

4. SCTP will populate the squad assignments based on the time and date received (time stamp) on the envelope containing your paperwork and check. PLEASE send by regular mail with NO signature required. Sending paperwork requiring a signature may delay your paperwork!

5. Download and complete the pre-registration form (also available on the SSSF website) that provides your information along with dates and times you would like your squads assigned. Please give us 3 options for times and days.

6. Teams will be notified of their pre-registration by May 29 and before normal registration which opens on June 1st.

Note:
Completed form(s) must be sent in with payment either by credit card or by check, no payment sent in with forms will result in no squads entered for that team. These payments are “nonrefundable”!! If you pay for 15 athletes and only 12 show up, the other 3 athlete’s fees are not returned.

Completed forms and payments must be mailed to us no sooner than May 15, 2019 and sent to:

Scholastic Clay Target Program High Over All Trap Event

SCTP will offer another High Over All (HOA) for teams that will include all of the “Trap” disciplines! Teams bringing athletes and competing in all 3 Trap disciplines of 16 yard Trap, Handicap Trap and Trap Doubles will have the opportunity for their team to earn a place among the top teams for a separate HOA!

This “Trap HOA” will be based on a team’s top 5 athletes in 16 yard trap, top 5 athletes in Handicap Trap and top 5 athletes in Trap Doubles. That total score will be used for the teams “Trap HOA”! It does not matter if the athletes are rookies or varsity as team scoring will be used!

These awards will be announced on the afternoon of Saturday, July 21st along with the Trap awards and overall HOA awards at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio.

Teams don’t have to do anything different, they just need to have 5 or more athletes compete in each of these 3 disciplines to be eligible!

“We’re not only happy to partner with Kids & Clays on this event but are thrilled to be able to offer such a large prize package just for participating in the event,” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP National Program Director. “This event will make for a great ending to what is shaping up as record-setting National Championships at Cardinal.”

A portion of the proceeds, through the Kids & Clays Foundation, benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities, who provide housing and other help to tens of thousands of critically ill children and their families across the country each year.

“We are blessed to be associated with such a quality organization as the SCTP,” said Doug Jeanneret, Kids & Clays Foundation executive director. “We certainly invite all who have an interest in shooting and also in helping youth to attend this marquis event.”

2017 SCTP College Nationals

Marengo, OH – The SCTP College Nationals were held October 27-29, 2017 at the “Spooky” Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH. The facility, decked out with ghouls, goblins and witches, was once again the host for this 3rd annual College event!

231 athletes of representing 25 teams from 15 states made up over 700 registrations at this year’s College Nationals! Throwing over 125,000 clay targets in Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, Bunker Trap and 5-Stand kept the Cardinal Center staff quite busy for a few days.

This year’s tournament experienced some very “terrifying” weather thanks to Mother Nature! Rain and snow coupled with temperatures dipping into the low 30’s made for some very interesting rounds!

Division 1 teams comprised of this year’s (HOA) champions, Lindenwood University of Missouri! Runner up, Midland University of Nebraska gave them a tough battle as did 3rd place Bethel College from Tennessee.

Division II teams included this year’s champion’s Martin Methodist of Tennessee (who had the overall HOA high score for the 2nd straight year), runner-up Ft. Hayes State University of Kansas followed by Hillsdale College of Michigan.

Division III schools were represented by this year’s National Champions Emanuel College of Georgia, Runner-ups University of Alabama Clay Shooting Team and 3rd place team, Eastern Kentucky University.

This year, the SCTP added Division IV. This newly added division will consist of 2 Year Colleges of which was won by Roane State Community College of Tennessee with Runner-up, Hawkeye Community College of Iowa!

Individuals turning in stellar performances included Ladies HOA winner, Paige Denny of the Midland University Shotgun Team and Men’s HOA winner, Riley Ross representing Ft. Hayes State. These athletes won Shamrock Leather Shooting bags compliments of the SCTP and Shamrock! Other notables were a perfect performance shot in the Skeet event (200 Straight) by Eli Christman – Martin Methodist College!

Braving the snow and frigid temperatures all day at the 2017 SCTP College Nationals on Saturday, athletes found some energy to compete in a “Spooktacular” Last Competitor Standing competition along with a costume judging contest (by their peers)!

For the costume contest, coming in 1st place and dressed as a Panda Bear was Darrien Lettman. 2nd place went to Noah Adair dressed as a clown and 3rd place went to a chicken worn by Mark Beardsley! These athletes were awarded shamrock leather products and ammunition provided by Fiocchi. Congratulations and great job by all of our costume wearing athletes!!

Competing in the Last Competitor Standing competition and toughing out the below average temperatures of a late October evening were the following athletes: Dressed as a “T-Rex” and fighting off all competition was the champion and “Last Competitor Standing”, Christian Salvanera! The Runner up award was won by Andy Carey with 3rd place going to Ty McCaskey, 4th awarded to Marcus Draves and 5th going to Nathan Hembree!

Great job to all of the competitors and we sure hope you all had a wonderful time!

“Great facility, great teams/coaches/athletes/parents and cold weather! The SCTP Team worked very hard and thoroughly enjoyed working with these great teams. We are extremely excited and looking forward to next year’s tournament!” commented Tom Wondrash, SCTP National Director. “We received the final score sheet at about 2:00pm on Sunday, started handing out awards at 2:15 and were finished (waving good-bye) to the teams and athletes by 3:00pm! It just doesn’t get any better than that for these teams!”

For a full list of results and finishes in all disciplines, please see our website at www.sssfonline.org and click on “results”.

The SCTP would like to Thank the Cardinal Shooting Center for their hard work, Jeff McClure from the MidwayUSA Foundation and all the parents and teams for attending and supporting our great program!
