Central Falcon Shooters Take WI SCTP State Trap Title!

June 26, 2017 – Wisconsin Trapshooting Association Homegrounds – Nekoosa, WI. – The Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) State Championships is a three-weekend long event held annually to determine the best youth shotgun teams in Wisconsin. Last year’s SCTP High-Over-All National Champion Central Falcons stood up to the challenge by sweeping the top-varsity spots in all three events this year; Skeet held June 10 at Sauk County Trap & Skeet, Sporting Clays on June 17 & 18 at Woods & Meadow in Warrens and the Trap Championship held at the WTA Homegrounds on June 23 & 24 in Nekoosa. Overall 1423 athletes including 246 young ladies partook in one of the three SCTP State Championship events, an increase of nearly 20% from last year.

The Championship events are highlighted each year with the Trap Championship as it is the largest shooting event in Wisconsin and one of the largest in the country with 1293 athletes from 62 different teams that competed Friday afternoon and all day Saturday on the 30 fields at the WTA Homegrounds. The Falcons five of Hunter Conrad, Kenneth Beverly, Mathew Perona, John Dietz and Scott Hanover combined to break 486 of 500 possible targets to take a three target advantage over the Beaver Dam Trap Team and nine targets over the third-place Sauk County Youth Trap Team. The Waterford Wolverines and B.H.S. Demons were fourth and fifth.

Topping the Junior Varsity teams was Rocket Trap from Oostburg, Intermediate Advanced went to the Central Falcons, Intermediate Entry to Sauk County and Rookie gold was won by the Hudson Raiders.

Aaron Walechka of the Jefferson Sportsmens Club Youth Trap Team took the Men’s Grand Champion buckle home for breaking 99 targets along with Courtney Uhlenhake of the B.H.S. Demons who brought home the ladies Grand Champion buckle with a 95.

Top individual scores for men went to Tyler Thiede in Varsity, Robert Rahut in Junior Varsity, Logan Kieran in Intermedate Advanced, Greyson Ponder in Intermediate Entry and Payton Johnson in Rookie.  Top ladies were Amy Spiering in Varsity, Jenna Leah Crook in Junior Varsity, Chloe Uhlenhake in Intermediate Advanced, Chloe Shied in Intermediate Entry and Taylor Dale in Rookie. Jordan Hintz and Alexandra Konop took the Collegiate honors.

Proving they are more than just trap shooters; Central also won the 2017 State High-Over-All Championship totaling 1066 of a possible 1100 in the combination of Skeet (295), Sporting Clays (283), and Trap (486) to top the Marquette Hilltoppers and Waterford Wolverines.

The weekend at the WTA Homegrounds was filled with side events including Handicap, Doubles and Bunker Trap and several shooting games; this year over 180,000 targets were thrown without a single safety incident; a testament to the dedicated coaches and parents who put safety first in the SCTP. The WTA members did a wonderful job preparing the grounds and trap fields for the largest single-day event ever at the facility that opened in 2013.

Up next for the Wisconsin SCTP teams is the National Championships held July 8-15, 2017 at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio.  Currently there are over 425 Wisconsin athletes registered to compete in the event including the Central Falcons who are heading to Ohio to attempt to repeat as the H.O.A National Champions for the second consecutive year. Over 1.5 million targets will be thrown over the eight-day event.

All State Team Qualifications and Guidelines for Nationals

Athletes that competed in their respective state SCTP tournaments in trap, skeet and sporting clays are eligible to make their states All-State Team at the 2017 National Championships in Marengo, OH.

Any athlete that placed in the top five at their respective state championships will be eligible to represent his or her state in that discipline. If a top-five athlete is NOT attending the SCTP National Championships in Ohio, then the opportunity will be bumped down to the next eligible competitor that is attending the National Championships.

Athletes attending the National Championships (representing their state as an All State Team member) will receive a custom shirt signifying their All-State Team designation!

Guidelines:

Top five athletes will be determined by the actual score shot at their respective State SCTP shoot.

Ties may be settled with a shoot off. If a shoot off was not held, then reverse long run will be in effect. If score sheets are not available or have been disposed of, we will allow the oldest of the athletes tied…..ie; senior in High School vs a sophomore for example.

Scores at the National Championships will be used from the athlete’s normal squading with his or her team. All-State Team members will only shoot together if there is a tie between the states for 1st – 3rd places in their respective disciplines where a shoot-off will be necessary to determine the winning state team. In trap/skeet, a full round of 25 each will be shot. In sporting clays, pre-determined stations will be shot off in a sudden death match.

This is NOT an HOA event! Athletes do not need to compete in all three disciplines.

SCTP will provide awards to the first- through third-place team members for each discipline. These awards will be presented at the respective awards ceremonies on Thursday and Saturday.

The All-State Teams will be comprised of five athletes from each state for each discipline, non-collegiate athletes only!

Score boards will be posted in the events registration building, the SCTP store and scoring annex and updated as athletes are scored in their respective events.

Controversial items or rules questions/determinations will be voted on and ruled by the appropriate discipline committee members. The tournament director will make final determination.

Good luck and congratulations to all of the SCTP All State Team members!

New National Team Provides Pipeline for Next Olympic Shotgun Competitors

The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) in conjunction with USA Shooting would like to officially announce the formation of the SCTP / USAS National Team! This newly formed team will be comprised of athletes placing in Bunker Trap and International Skeet at the SCTP’s National International Style Championships being held in Colorado Springs, CO July 23-29, 2017.

The top three men and ladies in Bunker Trap and International Skeet (12 total athletes) will make this national team and be recognized at the awards banquet and ceremony on July 29, 2017, at the Double Tree hotel in Colorado Springs.

These athletes will receive a USA Shooting jacket, paid fall selection match fees and ammo, along with an SCTP National Team vest, five cases of NobelSport Quattro Finest International ammunition and more! Details concerning the training camps and the naming of a head coach for this team will be forthcoming.

“What a great opportunity to advance in the international shooting disciplines for these athletes and families,” Tom Wondrash, SCTP national director, said. “This has been a thought for several years and now working with USA Shooting, we are seeing this become reality. We are able to now showcase 12 athletes instead of the four we have in the past and also help define a clearer path to the US National Team and the Olympics.”

These 12 spots will be re-earned at each year’s SCTP International Nationals. The Scholastic Clay Target Program is the official youth shooting program to USA Shooting and provides a pipeline for future international shotgun competitors. SCTP National Team Championships Slated to Be the Largest Championships to Date

With a record number of teams and athletes registering, attendance at the upcoming 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Programs (SCTP) National Championships is on track to break records in all facets of the tournament and clay target shooting.

The national event is scheduled for July 8-15, 2017, in Marengo, Ohio, at the Cardinal Shooting Center located just north of Columbus.

With over a million competition targets scheduled to be thrown, teams from 23+ states will compete for national titles in skeet, sporting clays, singles trap, handicap trap, double trap, skeet doubles and bunker trap. This year’s event sits currently at over 5,300 registrations (up over 700 from the best year on record) with 15 to 20 teams to register yet! With practice rounds and side games, this year’s event will easily see over 1.5 million total targets thrown, making this the largest youth clay target shooting tournament in the world!

“That’s a lot of clay in the air — roughly eight semi loads of targets,” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP national director and national tournament director. “Our industry sponsors and support have to be excited about that. I know our target sponsor, White Flyer, is very excited about this year’s tournament. This year’s nationals is a testament of the strong support we receive from the industry as well as the dedication of our teams, athletes, coaches and families. We couldn’t be more excited to see these numbers and welcome everyone out to see this year’s event.”

The skeet portion of this year’s tournament (governed by the National Skeet Shooting Association – NSSA) will be yet another record-breaking event in itself. With more than 956 registered athletes (contributing over 191,000 targets to the one million plus for the tournament), this will be the largest skeet tournament in the world.

The SCTP welcomes everyone to come out and watch some of the best youth shooters in the world and meet industry reps from all over the country.

If you’re interested in sponsoring or donating to this year’s national event, there is still time. Contact Tom Wondrash at twondrash@sssfonline.com or visit www.sssfonline.org/tournament-sponsorship.

Success for Libby Rock Crushers Clay Shooting Team

Reprinted with permission of The Western News

Libby has fared well in state high school athletics this year, and now they’ve brought home medals in clay target shooting. The Libby Rock Crushers have been around for about six years now and are part of an organization called the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), which includes the clay target sports of trap, skeet and sporting clays.

Our athletes have competed at a state level since the beginning. Now we continue to produce shooters that are challenging our experienced adult shooters, let alone their youth counterparts.

A couple of weeks ago the Rock Crushers hosted the Western Regional SCTP shoot. This shoot brought 30 shooters from Libby, Hamilton, Missoula, the Flathead and Bigfork to participate in a 150-bird event. Our team took home the high overall runner-up trophy. That team consisted of Dameon Kelch, Isaac O’Rourke, Austin Rasmussen, Nate Pomeroy and Maverick Owens. Dameon Kelch was also the individual skeet champion. Maverick Owens, Anna Marie Kebschull and Walker Mills also won their division in trap.

Then this past weekend we took five young men to the State SCTP Shoot in Billings. The Rock Crushers represented Libby very well, but just missed placing by a couple of targets in the team events. However, Dameon Kelch faired really well, taking second in Varsity in sporting clay and third in both trap and skeet. Austin Rasmussen finished third in both skeet and sporting clays. Isaac O’Rouke had the best skeet score for our team and placed fifth overall but fourth in his division.

The toughest division was the intermediate division (seventh and eighth graders). Four of the top five scores came out of this division, where high schoolers compete against both other high schoolers and college-aged contestants.

Nate Pomeroy had his personal best trap with an 89. Maverick Owens improved on his season averages.

We are always looking for new athletes, so if you are interested contact Coaches Mike Cirian or Tom Bailey or talk to one of the athletes to see if it something you may want to try.
