Large Prize Package Up For Grabs at Nationals Kids & Clays Event

(Marengo, OH) – Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) is partnering with the Kids and Clays Foundation to hold a registered two-day sporting clay charity event at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio.

The event will be held Friday July 20 and Saturday July 21 during SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target Program National Championships.  The event is open to the public, parents and coaches of athletes attending the SCTP and the athletes themselves.

All registrants for the event will be entered in a drawing for a large prize package of firearms, outdoor and shooting gear worth more than $14,000! Prizes, donated by many great sponsors, are listed below.

Click here to sign up for this event today! The event is open to the public and those participating or attending the SCTP National Championships.

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) is the nation’s leader in youth development shooting sports programs. The Kids and Clays Foundation supports a series of shooting events across the country with all proceeds benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities. All proceeds from this special two-day event will help each organization fulfill their mission.

“We’re not only happy to partner with Kids & Clays on this event but are thrilled to be able to offer such a large prize package just for participating in the event,” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP National Program Director. “This event will make for a great ending to what is shaping up as record-setting National Championships at Cardinal.”

Besides the great prizes, top finishers in this registered event will be recognized with trophies.

A portion of the proceeds, through the Kids & Clays Foundation, benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities, who provide housing and other help to tens of thousands of critically ill children and their families across the country each year.

“We are blessed to be associated with such a quality organization as the SCTP,” said Doug Jeanneret, Kids & Clays Foundation executive director. “We certainly invite all who have an interest in shooting and also in helping youth to attend this marquis event.”

Proceeds will also benefit the SCTP’s scholarship program providing assistance to graduating high school seniors continuing their education in college. Scholarship applications are available on the SSSF’s website.

Who Will Take Top Gun Honors in 2018?

The Scholastic Clay Target Program and Scholastic Action Shooting Program are excited to announce a new event at this year’s National Championships – the Top Gun Challenge.

Over the years we have watched the increase in athletes shooting multiple disciplines in both our programs at nationals. We wanted to find a way to recognize the commitment and stamina these athletes have shown competing in so many events, over the course of the week of nationals.

CZ-USA, a large sponsor of both SCTP and SASP heard us talking about wanting to start some kind of “Top Gun” competition and graciously offered to sponsor the top prize for the winner. CZ-USA will be donating a Shotgun, a Rifle and Pistol to SCTP/SASP and we will be awarding all three prizes to the High Overall Top Gun Challenge competitor.

With CZ’s support here is what we have come up with for the 2018 SCTP/SASP Nationals.

Top Gun Challenge Eligibility Criteria, Scoring and Prizes

  • Athletes wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must be current team members in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) AND the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP).
  • Athletes wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must be pre-registered to shoot the following events at the 2018 National Championships:
    • 16 Yard Trap
    • Skeet
    • Sporting Clays
    • Rimifre Rifle (irons or optics)
    • Centerfire or Rimfire Pistol
  • Each athlete wishing to compete in the Top Gun Challenge must complete a registration form in person at either the SASP or SCTP registration desk located at the Cardinal Center Central Entry Building prior to competing in their first event. Athletes will then shoot all competition events as usual.
  • We will compile scores from your events and calculate the winners. Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays is easy you will get the total number of birds you break in each discipline, so a possible 600 points. Since SASP is based on time and not total targets hit, it will be done a little differently. We will take all participants and rank both their rifle times and their pistol times fastest to slowest.
    • The fastest in each discipline will get 200, second place 199, third place 198 and so on down the line until everyone has a score.  We will add all those points together and the athlete with the most points out of the possible 1000 will win.
  • Every Athlete who competes in all the events and signs up, will receive a Top Gun Challenge challenge coin just for participating and showing your shooting stamina.

Prizes for Athletes Grade 12 and Under

  • 1st prize – CZ USA 612 Target Shotgun, CZ 75 SP01 Phantom Pistol and a 512 American Rifle
  • 2nd Prize – CZ Drake 12ga. Over/Under
  • 3rd Prize – Certificate for a GLOCK Pistol
  • 4th Prize – Mossberg Blaze .22 Rifle
  • 5th Prize – Case of Aguila shotgun shells and 1000 rounds of Federal Premium Hunter Match .22 ammo
  • 6th Prize – Walker’s electronic hearing protection, Certificate for XX2I glasses

Prizes for Collegiate Athletes

  • 1st Prize Mossberg Blaze .22 Rifle
  • 2nd Prize Certificate for XX2I Glasses
  • 3rd Prize Browning Range Bag
SCTP and SASP want to thank all of our sponsors for their support of our programs and the Top Gun Challenge!

SCTP National Team Trains in Ohio

The 2018 SCTP National Team recently completed its fourth training camp at Fairfield Sportsmen’s Association in Cincinnati, Ohio.  This was the last scheduled training camp for the team and team members Madeleine Taylor, Mark Shields, and Trevor Evelhair (not pictured) took advantage of one last opportunity to work with coaches Terri DeWitt and Joe Buffa.

Because not all of the SCTP National Team members could attend this 3-day training camp, available training spots were filled with local (and not so local) athletes coming from Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Montana. Next up for most of these international trap and skeet competitors is the USA Shooting Junior Olympic Championships in Colorado Springs.  July will see them back in Colorado Springs for the SCTP International National Championships where the 2019 SCTP National Team will be selected.

International Championships Registration Open June 15

The SCTP, in conjunction with USA Shooting, is hosting the Scholastic Clay Target Program’s International Style National Championships on July 22-27, 2018 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Registration by SCTP team coaches opens on Friday, June 15 in the SHOT System.

Here is the event schedule for the competition:

Sunday July 22nd – Open Training for Bunker and Skeet

Monday July 23rd – Open Training for Bunker and Skeet

Tuesday July 24th – I-Skeet Competition 75 Targets

Wednesday July 25th – I-Skeet Competition 50 Targets & Finals (followed by awards)

Thursday July 26th – Bunker Trap 75 Targets

Friday July 27th – Bunker Trap 50 Targets & Finals (followed by awards)

Coaches: The competition registration will open on June 15th for this tournament. You will need to squad your athletes prior to Thursday, July 19th so that they can be placed on random shooting squads for the competition. Walk on’s will generally not be allowed unless there is room available.

Top 3 placing athletes in Men’s and Ladies Bunker Trap as well as top 3 placing athletes in International Skeet (12 total athletes) will earn a spot on the 2019 SCTP National Team. Athletes must meet a minimum qualifying score (MQS) of a 90 x 125 or better in the qualification rounds, regardless of finals placing, in order to be eligible for a National Team spot.

If all athletes in the final have achieved the MQS, then finals placement will determine the top 3 athletes. However, if there are athletes in a discipline final who have not attained the MQS, those athletes will not be eligible for the National Team, regardless of finals placement. At their discretion, The Head Coach and National Director will then fill any open Team slots with eligible athletes.

Due to USA Shooting’s scheduling of the Fall Selection match immediately following the SCTP Nationals, we will not host an awards banquet following this year’s International Nationals to allow athletes time for travel to the Fall Selection. We will award all medals/trophies at the range following the events.

Hope to see you all in Colorado Springs in July!!

A limited block of hotel rooms has been secured and are available for immediate booking at the Hotel Elegante’ – Colorado Springs. Room rates are $99 for a single or a double. Please contact the Hotel Elegante’ directly at 1-719-576-5900 or 1-800-981-4012. When making your reservations, please reference “USA Shooting / SCTP Nationals”, code #2226494. (this includes breakfast) The cutoff date is July 1st but we would not recommend waiting that long as these rooms will fill up fast, especially at these prices! You can upgrade to different rooms at additional price. See additional information for booking your room and about the Hotel Elegante.

Hope to see you all in Colorado Springs in July!!
