Starting Wednesday, June 7, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) state trapshooting championships at the Iowa State Trapshooting Association home grounds just north of Cedar Falls.
Youth teams started the competition on Wednesday with high school competitors participating Thursday through Sunday. Over 2,400 youth from over 100 Iowa teams are scheduled to participate.
This week’s trap championship event is the first of three culminating events to a season of shooting sports. Sporting clays and skeet state events will be conducted the next two weekends in Oskaloosa and Waukee.
Why So Popular? The Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program has grown from nearly 400 athletes in 2007 to about 3,700 today. Iowa has been the largest state across the nation in the Scholastic Clay Target Program for the past several years. There is no “bench” in the shooting sports so everyone gets to play regardless of athletic ability. The sport is also co-gender and accommodating to those with disabilities. Many Iowa schools offer varsity letters for trapshooting athletes requiring shooters to follow the same academic standards and good conduct policies as other student-athletes.
Most teams in Iowa begin practices in March and compete in dual, triangular and invitational meets throughout the spring. Teams are coached by adult volunteers who are certified through theIowa DNR Basic Shotgun Coach certification program. Firearms safety is always emphasized and the sport is safer than other popular sports offered in schools today. Iowa teams logged almost 600 competition events between September and June and have fired at over 1.6 million clay targets in these local competitions alone. An additional 500,000+ clay targets will be thrown during the 5 day trap championship event

Jason Anderson was brought on in January as the SCTP’s newest Regional Field Representative and covers the “Lower Midwest” area that includes Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
Anderson is in his seventeenth year as a public educator in the great state of Texas and in his eighth year at Allen High School in Allen Texas. He is the Head Coach of the two-time SCTP High School National Champions Allen Eagles Competitive Shooting Team, the Allen Archery Team, and the Bass Fishing Team. At Allen ISD he also developed the Outdoor Adventures Program, which is in its sixth year.
Allen Eagles Assistant head coach Richard Scott commented, “Winning is great, but Jason does so much more for these kids than a school teacher is required to do. Above all else, he’s been a positive influence and role model to hundreds of athletes while instilling in them a lifelong respect and appreciation for shooting sports.”
Anderson graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Sports Science and a Minor in Health. He was honored by the Dallas Ecological Foundation as Educator of the Year in 2014. In 2015 he became an NRA training counselor, and he is also an NRA Coach Level 2. Anderson has served as Texas’ State Advisor to the Scholastic Clay Target Program for the past three years.
“I am honored and excited to continue to promote and support SCTP teams,” Anderson stated. “Supporting the SCTP coaches is key in our success.”
According to Carlton Nether, director of development for the Western U.S., “Jason brings a wealth of knowledge to our team. His dedication to youth sports in Texas is exactly what we need to continue our strong growth in the southern states.”
The 2017 shoot year is the inaugural year of the new NSSA/NSCA-SCTP program. Not only will the top SCTP shooters shooting NSSA and NSCA events be recognized at the end of the shoot year, but the NSSA/NSCA-SCTP Tour is being introduced to promote the new recognition program. SCTP participants will be able to compete for awards at these events, while also being able to experience the environment and excitement of the top skeet and sporting clays tournaments.

Are you starting a new Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) team or want to grow your existing club’s numbers? Then, register now for the SCTP Team Start Up Program. The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) has joined up with industry partners to provide essential guns and gear to the teams. The items are shipped through Zanders Sporting Goods in Sparta, Illinois.
The start-up package includes your selection of two shotguns, two gun cases, one shell catcher, 10 sets of eye and ear protection, 10 over/under shell pouches, 10 range bags with shoulder strap, deluxe gun cleaning kit and 10 cases of ammo. The retail value of this package is over $3,100.00!

If a shooter was previously in the SCTP program, but dropped for a year or more, you may count them as a brand new shooter.
Raise $2500
Send the money to Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and we will contribute additional funds. SCTP will then purchase a start-up package on behalf of the club and also deposit $1500 into its MidwayUSA Foundation Team Endowment Account (*available only to the first 15 teams).
Exceptions:
If your team were to disband, we would expect that the shotguns be donated to another SCTP Team/Club in your state or forward them to the address listed below.
The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) not only turns out talented athletes, but it instills and promotes qualities that empower its athletes to become leaders in their communities. Lizzy Worthington, a 17-year-old senior at BGM High School in Brooklyn, Iowa, is a testament to the SCTP’s dedication to developing its athletes’ character, drive and ambition.
Worthington, a Girl Scout and member of SCTP’s BGM trapshooting team, has raised more than $50,000 to plan and build a four-field trap range (Bear Creek Range) as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. The trap range, which is located on county land much closer to the school than other trap ranges, will open this spring. In addition to providing a convenient facility for the BGM trap team to practice, it will provide a location for other area high schools to establish teams.
Based in part on her Gold Award project, Worthington was selected to be the Girl Scout emcee for the Governor’s Luncheon for Scouting in Des Moines on Feb. 10, 2017. The event was a fundraiser for the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa and the Mid-Iowa Council Boy Scouts of America. Worthington also helped plan a banquet, which was held on Feb. 11, in Brooklyn, Iowa, which raised $10,000 toward the shooting facility and an additional $10,000 in SCTP scholarship funds.
Worthington has already accomplished so much in her young age, and she’s just getting started. She early enlisted in the Navy in October of her senior year at BGM and was nominated for appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy by both Iowa’s U.S. Senators. She plans to attend the academy if appointed or Iowa State University, majoring in chemical engineering and joining the SIU Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps.
The Gazette recently featured Worthington in a feature article touting her many accomplishments.
The SCTP would like to announce the continued support of RE Ranger. Randolph, the maker of the RE Ranger line of competitive shooting eyewear, will continue to support the SCTP at the Gold Level for the 2017 shooting year. Randolph makes several styles of eyewear that fit the clay target enthusiasts including the Ranger Falcon and Ranger Falcon Pro’s. New this year is a three-lens set w/frame kit that will surely not disappoint the athletes and their parents’ pocket books. Be sure to watch for them coming out in March or April. These products and more will be available on the SCTP’s online store for their athletes and teams.
“RE Ranger is proud to continue our longstanding relationship and sponsorship for the SCTP program for the upcoming 2017 year,” said Sarah Waszkiewicz, general manager of Ranger sales. “We continue to witness the growth of this incredible program that provides excellent coaching, product giveaways, educational training, scholarships and more. More importantly we get to see the benefits of the SCTP program for these kids at various levels and we couldn’t be happier to support the cause. The youth is the future of this sport after all and we should be investing in their growth through programs like these.”
“Randolph/RE Ranger have been great partners/sponsors of SCTP,” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP’s national director. “The RE Ranger line of shooting glasses are a super fit for our athletes, more and more of them are identifying with their brand. We appreciate the support and confidence that Sarah and her team put in us for sure.”
