USA Shooting 2017 Biennial Coach Conference

USA Shooting is hosting the 2017 Biennial Coach Conference 25-27 August at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Deadline for registration is August 10th. Special rooming rates expire August 4th.

The keynote speaker will be Raymond Prior, the author of the Bullseye Mind. Tentatively USA Shooting is planning on the following topics: sport psychology, fundraising, ammo testing, USAS athlete panel – “what makes a good coach?”, how to coach millennials, a coach panel – “three things to make a successful youth program”, ISSF rules update, media training, USAS Youth Programs update, USAS Coach Academy update, pre-conference shotgun clinic at the USAS Shotgun range, just to name a few.

There will be a live Internet broadcast of the Biennial Coach Conference to those who cannot travel to Colorado Springs.

In the registration form you will have a choice of attending the conference in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) or register for the Internet broadcast that you can watch from home with no travel expenses. You will be emailed a link to the live broadcast a few days before the start of the conference.

Paid registrations will receive free access to all of the recorded presentations about 30 days after the end of the conference. These presentations will be available online in the USAS Coach Academy.

This year there will be a naming ceremony for the Lones Wigger Legacy Hall and Shooting Center on Friday evening 25 August and the Hall of Fame induction banquet on Saturday evening. A large turnout with VIPs is expected from allied shooting organizations and industry.

SCTP National Team Championships Slated to Be the Largest Championships to Date

With a record number of teams and athletes registering, attendance at the upcoming 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Programs (SCTP) National Championships is on track to break records in all facets of the tournament and clay target shooting.

The national event is scheduled for July 8-15, 2017, in Marengo, Ohio, at the Cardinal Shooting Center located just north of Columbus.

With over a million competition targets scheduled to be thrown, teams from 23+ states will compete for national titles in skeet, sporting clays, singles trap, handicap trap, double trap, skeet doubles and bunker trap. This year’s event sits currently at over 5,300 registrations (up over 700 from the best year on record) with 15 to 20 teams to register yet! With practice rounds and side games, this year’s event will easily see over 1.5 million total targets thrown, making this the largest youth clay target shooting tournament in the world!

“That’s a lot of clay in the air — roughly eight semi loads of targets,” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP national director and national tournament director. “Our industry sponsors and support have to be excited about that. I know our target sponsor, White Flyer, is very excited about this year’s tournament. This year’s nationals is a testament of the strong support we receive from the industry as well as the dedication of our teams, athletes, coaches and families. We couldn’t be more excited to see these numbers and welcome everyone out to see this year’s event.”

The skeet portion of this year’s tournament (governed by the National Skeet Shooting Association – NSSA) will be yet another record-breaking event in itself. With more than 956 registered athletes (contributing over 191,000 targets to the one million plus for the tournament), this will be the largest skeet tournament in the world.

The SCTP welcomes everyone to come out and watch some of the best youth shooters in the world and meet industry reps from all over the country.

1400 SCTP Athletes Ready to Invade the WTA Homegrounds

The Wisconsin Scholastic Clay Target Program will be holding it’s fourth and final State Championship from June 23 to 25 at the WTA Homegrounds in Rome, Wisconsin. The previous three weekends had record turnouts for  International Bunker Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays with nearly 25% growth over last year.

The weekend will consist of 100 Championship Singles targets shot on Friday and Saturday plus Handicap, Doubles and International Bunker events on Sunday. In addition, there will be a Make-A-Break competition all three days along with shooting sports vendors, gun demonstrations and Wisconsin’s largest “Last Competitor Standing” on Saturday afternoon.

Over 1400 athletes from 62 Wisconsin SCTP teams are registered for the event with almost 2,000 registrations, an increase of over 30% from last year. Approximately 300 team and individual awards will be presented at the four Championship events. Nearly 20% of all registered athletes are females again this year.

Friday, June 23 – 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. 100 Singles Championship, vendors, gun demonstrations, Make-A-Break all day, open training for Trap, Doubles, Handicap and Bunker.

Saturday, June 24th – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  100 Singles Championship, vendors, gun demonstrations, Make-A-Break all day, Last Competitor Standing.

Sunday, June 25th – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 100 Doubles, 100 Handicap and 50 International Bunker, vendors, gun demonstrations, Make-A-Break all day.

The WTA Homegrounds features 30 American Trap Fields, Wisconsin’s only Olympic bunker and 104 fully hook-up campsites on 280 acres in the town of Rome. It is located at 1312 Akron Drive, Nekoosa, WI 54457.

The WiSCTP State Trap Championship is the last major event prior to the SCTP Nationals held July 8-15, 2017, at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio. Currently Wisconsin has the most athletes registered for the event with over 470 athletes making the trek to Central Ohio.

Hunting Hills Hawkeyes Host Benefit Shoot

Sammy Riley, 9, of Waynesburg, recently received the runner-up award in the Rookie Dvision from assistant head coach Randy Coss during a benefit shoot at Hunting Hills in Dilliner hosted by Hunting Hills Hawkeyes, Greene County’s Scholastic Clay target Program team. Participants could compete individually or in teams of five in the 100-clay target shoot.

Award winners were:

• High overall male – Rex Buckhalter of Dilliner.

• High overall female – Pam Blaker of Carmichaels.

• Adult – Will Luckey of Mt. Morris, second place; Doug Hinerman of Waynesburg, third; John Riley of Waynesburg, fourth; and Parker Woodring of Carmichaels, fifth.

• High overall youth female – Abby Ozohonish of Jefferson.

• High overall youth male – Tristan Cole of Waynesburg.

• Senior varsity – Brandon Sanders of Waynesburg, champion, and Zach Abbott of Rogersville, runner-up.

• Junior varsity – Tristan Cole of Waynesburg, champion, and Justin Popovec of Perryopolis, runner-up.

• Intermediate advanced – Zach Wilson of Waynesburg, champion, and Owen Hughes of Rogersville, runner-up. • Intermediate entry – Robby Dillon of Adah, champion, and Cole Jones of Jefferson, runner-up.

• Rookie – Brendan Cole of Waynesburg, champion, and Sammy Riley of Waynesburg, runner-up.

• Team – Team Miller with Frank Golsky, Brandon Sanders, Dylan Miller, Garrett Ross and Justin Golsky, first place; and Rex Buckhaulter, Eugene Latusek, Noah Haines, Sam Sellaro and Mark Sellaro, second.

The benefit shoot was sponsored by Greene County commissioners and Greene County Department of Recreation. The Hawkeyes will compete June 17 in the annual Pennsylvania Scholastic Clay Target Program Sporting Clays Championship at Factoryville Sportsmen’s Club. The event will involve a 100-target shoot to determine state winners in six skill divisions.

Success for Libby Rock Crushers Clay Shooting Team

Libby has fared well in state high school athletics this year, and now they’ve brought home medals in clay target shooting. The Libby Rock Crushers have been around for about six years now and are part of an organization called the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), which includes the clay target sports of trap, skeet and sporting clays.

Our athletes have competed at a state level since the beginning. Now we continue to produce shooters that are challenging our experienced adult shooters, let alone their youth counterparts.

A couple of weeks ago the Rock Crushers hosted the Western Regional SCTP shoot. This shoot brought 30 shooters from Libby, Hamilton, Missoula, the Flathead and Bigfork to participate in a 150-bird event. Our team took home the high overall runner-up trophy. That team consisted of Dameon Kelch, Isaac O’Rourke, Austin Rasmussen, Nate Pomeroy and Maverick Owens. Dameon Kelch was also the individual skeet champion. Maverick Owens, Anna Marie Kebschull and Walker Mills also won their division in trap.

Then this past weekend we took five young men to the State SCTP Shoot in Billings. The Rock Crushers represented Libby very well, but just missed placing by a couple of targets in the team events. However, Dameon Kelch faired really well, taking second in Varsity in sporting clay and third in both trap and skeet. Austin Rasmussen finished third in both skeet and sporting clays. Isaac O’Rouke had the best skeet score for our team and placed fifth overall but fourth in his division.

The toughest division was the intermediate division (seventh and eighth graders). Four of the top five scores came out of this division, where high schoolers compete against both other high schoolers and college-aged contestants.

Nate Pomeroy had his personal best trap with an 89. Maverick Owens improved on his season averages.

SSSF/NRA All Scholastic Team Members Announced

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) and National Rifle Association (NRA) Competitive Shooting Sports division are proud to announce members of the 2017 All-Scholastic Team!

Over 200 student athletes from 22 states have been named to the team this year and will be recognized at the opening ceremonies of the SSSF/SCTP/SASP Team Championship event on July 12 in Marengo, Ohio.

The All-Scholastic Team recognizes the top student athletes in the SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target and Scholastic Action Shooting Program for their achievements in the classroom, on the range and in their communities. Through an application process, 2017 All-Scholastic Team Members have proven academic excellence by posting 3.0 or better grade point averages, shooting excellent scores in recent competition (95% in trap or skeet, 85% in sporting clays, 88% in international trap/skeet or 75 seconds or less for SASP) and by demonstrating outstanding community involvement.

2017 Wisconsin SCTP International Trap Championship Results

Congratulations to all who competed in the 2017 Wisconsin SCTP International Trap Championship on the bunker at the WTA Homegrounds, June 3-4.

The 2017 event boasted the highest scores of any competition on the bunker since it opened in 2014.

Ten athletes scored over 100 of 125 in this very difficult discipline, including the first 25-straight in a competition. The scores are proof of the hard work the athletes and coaches have put in this year!

Register June 10 for the SCTP International Championships

The SCTP, in conjunction with USA Shooting, is hosting the SCTP’s International Style National Championships on July 24-29, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Registration by SCTP team coaches opens on Saturday, June 10 in the SHOT System.

A limited number of rooms are available and must be booked prior to June 15 at the Double Tree Hotel in Colorado Springs for this week-long event.

Iowa SCTP Trapshooting Championships This Week

Starting Wednesday, June 7, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) state trapshooting championships at the Iowa State Trapshooting Association home grounds just north of Cedar Falls.

Youth teams started the competition on Wednesday with high school competitors participating Thursday through Sunday. Over 2,400 youth from over 100 Iowa teams are scheduled to participate.

This week’s trap championship event is the first of three culminating events to a season of shooting sports. Sporting clays and skeet state events will be conducted the next two weekends in Oskaloosa and Waukee.

Why So Popular?
The Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program has grown from nearly 400 athletes in 2007 to about 3,700 today. Iowa has been the largest state across the nation in the Scholastic Clay Target Program for the past several years. There is no “bench” in the shooting sports so everyone gets to play regardless of athletic ability.  The sport is also co-gender and accommodating to those with disabilities. Many Iowa schools offer varsity letters for trapshooting athletes requiring shooters to follow the same academic standards and good conduct policies as other student-athletes.

Most teams in Iowa begin practices in March and compete in dual, triangular and invitational meets throughout the spring. Teams are coached by adult volunteers who are certified through the Iowa DNR Basic Shotgun Coach certification program. Firearms safety is always emphasized and the sport is safer than other popular sports offered in schools today. Iowa teams logged almost 600 competition events between September and June and have fired at over 1.6 million clay targets in these local competitions alone. An additional 500,000+ clay targets will be thrown during the 5 day trap championship event

2017 Scholastic Clay Target Program Nationals Registration on Pace to Set Records

The month of June is a peak time for Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) team activity across the country, and if the first day of registration for the SCTP National Championships is any indicator, there will be record crowds again in Ohio for the July culminating event.

Registration for SCTP Nationals opened June 1 and in the first 24 hours of open registration for the July 8-15 National Championships, 132 teams from 23 different states registered over 2,000 athletes. Combined registrations in all SCTP events totaled 4,396 compared to 3,804 for the first 24 hours of tournament registration one year ago. An additional 70-80 SCTP teams are expected to register prior to the July 5 deadline.

“These numbers are absolutely incredible!” said Tom Wondrash, SCTP national director. “We had almost as many athletes and registrations in one day this year as we had in total at last year’s National Championships! People are excited about this year’s tournament for sure!”

The 2017 event at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio, is on track to outpace the 2016 SCTP National event, which finished with 2,176 athletes and 4,576 event entries.

While the numbers are already up significantly from last year’s registrations, Wondrash points out that there is still room at the spacious Cardinal Center.  “There are many times and dates still available for this year’s National Championships. We encourage teams to join us in July to continue the fun throughout the summer!”

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program will also hold its National Junior/Senior Championships in conjunction with the SCTP tournament. SASP Nationals registration opened on May 18 and currently has 342 athletes from 32 teams across 13 states registered to shoot. SASP registrations currently total 642 already out-pacing the 542 total entries from 2016. Teams may register for the SASP National Championships through July 5.  The 1911 division first being offered at Nationals already has 62 entries

About the National Championships

The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) 2017 National Championships will take place near Marengo, Ohio, at the Cardinal Shooting Center July 8-15. The eight-day event is expected to draw around 2,500 youth from over 30 states. Over one million shots will be fired during the event with around $16 million generated in economic impact. Participating teams are organized and coached by certified volunteer leaders and have participated in their SCTP/SASP state championship event.
